A Christian worldview of history is one seen through the optics of scripture, not necessarily using it as an explanation of it. It is a belief system that a faith based individual use to live their lives and associate with the world. Christian worldviews can also differ between the various Christian faiths and denominations, but many tenets of a scripture-based way of living is universal. When we discuss having a Christian worldview of history, I’m not referring to spiritualizing history, using scripture to link historical events or making exclamations about why Christ played a role in specific events throughout history. I’m referring to the application of a Christian worldview to the study of history because I believe it is germane to faith and happiness. This week’s course content informs us that a Christian worldview of history is ensuring that Christians are very prevalent when you discuss it and not to twist it into a provential approach. It should not use Christ as the excuse, reason or explanation as to why certain events occurred. We should be extremely aware of the dangers that agenda based approaches can be. A historian’s first and foremost responsibility is unbiased, objective truth. Even though we all naturally hold a bias, we should always be understanding of those biases and cautiously address them. A Christian worldview of history is important to me because I believe that everything happens for a reason, whether it’s a choice of Christ or man. It’s important to note that just about everything related to the history of western civilization relates to Christians or Christianity.
